Young Galaxy – ”Peripheral Visionaries” (Montréal, QC)
Written and animated by Sinbad Richardson. 3 min 42 seconds

I met with the band about wanting to make a music video for them. I asked if they would let me take ”We Have Everything” and come back with a finished video without any input or revisions on their part. To my surprise, they agreed and in the end they loved it and I loved making it.

Dusting off an old short animation.
I remembered an old animation I did about a weird looking guy taking a bus and having a bizarre trip, and I wanted to expand on those characters and stories.

Still from animated short used as base for We Have Everything. Click image to watch it on YouTube.

Thank you to Ramiro Polla for holding on to this animation for all these years! I thought I had lost it forever and would not have been able to tell the story again without it. Thanks bro!

Some of you may recognize Jennifer Harris from some of my other work. This is her first major part in a music video. Harris had cameo appearances in the video for D-Tension’sRetro Futuristic Backpacker’s Special and Miracle Fortress Have You seen In Your Dreams (although harder to spot).

Half a year later, we decided to create a narrative sequel to ‘We Have Everything’ for ‘Peripheral Visionaries’. Again, the band let me run with it.

How Adam and Eve Met…

Written and Animated by Sinbad Richardson

Dave Wheaton – Adam
Laura Wills – Eve
Alexander Chow – Male Friend
Tinjia Rosalinda – Female Friend

“Thank you all for making LE MOOD, the newest Montreal Jewish festival, a huge hit! Over 800 people dared to be curious and walked through LE MOOD’s doors on Sunday, June 5. Contributions from presenters, volunteers, curators, participants, and musical acts made LE MOOD stand out from anything Montreal had seen before.

The goal of LE MOOD was to create a community within which we can learn together. It was an honour that you joined us in the spirit of the day and explored what Jewish identity means to you. Thank you for being part of this remarkable day!”

Miracle Fortress – Have You Seen In Your Dreams?

Miracle Fortress – Have You Seen In Your Dreams? (Montreal, 2008)

How did you make it? After story-boarding the shots, I got my youngest cousins to act it out in a live action version of the music video. I edited that footage to the music as though it was the video itself. This video was then projected onto the stage of four MagnaDoodles, traced then photographed with a still camera on a fixed and marked tripod.

One unexpectedly long step of each drawing was turning on and off two Kino flow lights for each frame from a central eight button switch (one for each bulb). The animation is only ten drawings per second, I would advance the video three frames for each drawing since the original live action footage was shot at 30 fps. After each drawing I would erase MagnaDoodle board, losing them forever. I was really interested in that ephemeral aspect of the animation, I drew roughly 1,850 frames that would exist for a few minutes and then dissapear permanently with each swipe of the eraser. I animated the video over three weeks in a small rented room of an apartment on Rue Bernard in the dead of winter, all while going to school full time and working a part time job. I recently donated the boards to a second hand toy center.

The Magna Doodle was produced by Tyco until 1998 when most of Tyco’s toys were sold to Fisher-Price. The Magna Doodle is currently produced by the Ohio Art Company and used to be distributed in the United Kingdom by Fisher-Price. Fisher-Price have discontinued the Magna Doodle and have produced their own alternative called the Doodle Pro. The Doodle Pro is still available in the UK from the distribution company Megatel LTD.
